Feeling overrun by toys and the everyday clutter of life with kids? Take back your living areas and put some style back in your home with these easy (and family-friendly!) tips from the pros.
Put your hands up if your living room features more toys than furniture. Both hands up if you’ve designed the whole space around a big screen TV, where Dora and Pokemon run on a seemingly endless loop. Well, we have a message for you from some of North America’s most famous interior designers: it’s time for your living room to grow up. You’ll be pleased to hear that a design-savvy interior can still be practical for families, however. Stylish slipcovers, soft ottomans, sharp-looking storage options, and new, long-wearing paints and materials can withstand whatever abuse your kids can dish out, says Kenneth Brown, an interior designer in Los Angeles and host of HGTV’s reDesign. Here are 10 ways to turn your Toys R Us test facility into a chic, well-designed living space that the whole family—and even guests (remember them?)—can enjoy.
- Make it or fake it. We’re talking built-in storage, to get kids’ clutter out of sight. Window seats and banquettes do double duty by providing extra seating and storage, for example. “It’s a myth that built-ins will always break the bank,” says renowned New-York based interior designer, Elaine Griffin. Getting several quotes on custom work ensures you’ll get a good price. She also fakes a built-in look with inexpensive shelves and storage units. “IKEA’s journalist bookcases are one of the chic-est things that they carry,” she says. Providing built-ins, baskets, or an ottoman that opens for kids to put their toys away also teaches them to pick up after themselves, adds Brown.
